what....no really, i mean what

i bought a fish yesterday
for no reason
other then that when i was looking for a serving platter in one of my cupboards
last week
for my parent's anniversary party
i came across a glass vasey like bowly thing
and
i thought to myself
"that needs to have a fish in it"
~
so yesterday
my daughter and i went to the pet store
and
came home with a fish
~
he's pretty
isn't he
~
so today i had planned on asking all of you for your help
~
suggestions
for pet names for me to try out on him
with
maybe some kind of give away or something
for the winning name
~
but
after cleaning the rocks for the bottom of his bowl, fixing the water so the minerals in the tap water wouldn't kill him, making sure the water temperature itself was perfect and finally getting him out of his little plastic bowl from the pet store and into his new home
and
then
feeding him
i was all like
"what.was.i.thinking"
and
decided
that was the perfect name for him
~
seriously
"what.was.i.thinking"
and
that i'd just call him
WHAT
for short
~
i think he likes it
~
although i noticed this morning
he seemed to look at me only when i called him
mr. what

  1. Well of course. Fish are big on manners, you know. :)

  2. I used to have a dog named "Dog." So why can't you have a fish named "What?" But I can see why such a gorgeous creature would insist on being addressed as "Mister." I'm surprised he isn't commanding a "Sir."

  3. What WERE you thinking? I made the mistake, I mean I had the joy of owning goldfish once thinking they wouldn't be a problem. WRONG.
Anyway, enjoy Mr what, I was thinking "quinby" for a name, but Mr What seems appropriate.

  4. I have cats named Deja Mew and Purrsnickety, so Mr. What is pretty tame.

  5. I am smiling after reading that great fish story and I think Mr. What is a very good name -- unique and comes with a story -- those are the best kinds. You can tell him that I think he is a very handsome fish too : )

  6. been there done that with the fish thing... good luck.
I love the name. A former neighbour called their dog Asker... as in when you inquire the name they say... Asker.

  7. Well he's beautiful, that betta...and I have done that atleast three times in my life. They look awesome in glass vasey things that are not the typical betta bowl. He's very patriotic with his red and blue, I think I'de call him Old Glory or something like that. :-) Or how about Tom Brady!..hes a Patriot after all...

  8. That looks like a Siamese fighting fish to me. Someone gave my youngest son, Jeremy ( 25 ) one for his birthday and and he will have had the
fish three years in November. Amazing. I didn't think it could possibly live that long.

  9. Yes he is very pretty. That was a lot of work to set him up. How often are you going to have to clean it all out? You could put bubbles going from his mouth with the things he says to you.

  10. Well, when I first saw him, I thought "spectrum" (since Color Wheel didn't work) but realized he lacked the yellow and green. I think Mr. What is quite grand indeed!

I would have said "Rainbow", but "What" should do!

  12. He is a gorgeous fish and Mr. What reminds me of a Bond villian, which is quite appropriate for a Fighting Fish!

  16. Love "what" but he's already proving himself to have an attitude so I'd stick with Mr. What or he just may retaliate. You don't want to sleep with one eye open do you?

  17. We dealt with the death of my Darling Daughter's (she's 6) Beta fish this past week. It was a female named Salerina (Like Balerina only with an "S" since one of my daughter's middle names is Sally). Darling Daughter "rescued" her from a pet store three years ago. Salerina had been the apple of her eye. She faithfully kept watch of her, fed her, talked to her and saw her through a case of "ick", an attack from another fish which caused her to lose an eye, and more.
Her passing was a really hard loss for Darling Daughter. It has been four days now. I showed her this post, told her you had a male beta and told her the name. She lit up and laughed out loud!
Thanks for lighting up my little girl's eyes with your silly little name :)

P.S. My boys had a male beta. They named him Darth.

you know, as in "Darth Beta" ;)

  18. ROFL..."mr. what!!" Oh, you crack me up!!! But he's absolutely beautiful...sometimes "love" is irrational...and it is easy to see how you might have fallen for this fish! Thanks for the chuckles!! Love, Janine XO

Good for you...I am very bad with fish (like I kill them w/n about 12 hours). Gorgeous photo. Missed you!!! xoxo

  22. Very pretty Betta fish. I had the same thought when my Eldest bought her third Betta, plus super fancy globe bowl with heater and filter, new plastic plants...

  24. beautiful, if that's appropriate for a male fish to be called beautiful. mr. what... delightful. wishing mr. what many happy days as your pet. hope all is well.

  26. I had a Chinese fighter fish once, the only fish I ever had. We named her Skyllion (Skyla for short) because it means dogfish in Greek which is the name for a shark in ancient Greek mythology.

Skyla was beautiful, all red and long finned and everything. And then she died. I sat with her for 2 days while she pined away slowly, losing her colour, struggling to NOT float... It was terrible. I vowed never to get a fish ever again.

And then I saw your beauty. Now I am considering it again. Just maybe it won't be so bad this time...
