captured, but not always what I want...

while trying to capture this sunset that was blinding me
I used my zoom lens
but with great caution
due to the
"don't look into direct sunlight"
directions that are in bold letters on the box it came in
~~
"may cause retina damage"
it says
~~
now that's enough to scare someone who calls herself a photographer under her hushed breath
from ever shooting towards the sun again
right
?
well kind of
does squinting count for not looking
?

black dark thick clouds are pretty amazing but harder to capture
because well
it's dark outside
and
I pretty much hate using my flash
ever
for anything
there I said it...I'm a flash hater
~~
admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery
right
?
this photo
was taken while I held the camera low and shot up
in order to capture the moving clouds a little more clearly
~~
the only thing I like about it is that I captured a bug in flight
and
then the other night I whipped my car off to the side of the road
because
well
come on
the sky was orange
and
who doesn't want a photo of an orange sky
right
?
~~
and
then I realized the only way to get anything from where I was at
was to do
of telephone wires
which she has perfected
and
me
well I kind of felt like they were in my way
but
once I got home and looked at the photo
well
I think maybe she's onto something
that gorgeous creative friend of mine
~~
even though my focus and composition
suck
~and don't tell me otherwise...I'll have none of that today~

  1. Great narrative here...I like the subtle humor! And, very nice photos! I also like the power lines when they are allowed to be the subject...

  2. Cinner will feel right at home with that last shot, too, as she's always bustin' on her photos for having power lines running through them.

Once again, I sit and look at your stuff and think, "Damn, I need to go where she lives!" I promise you, I've never ever seen a sky that saturated by orange. Never. It's stunning.

Thanks Beth, for pulling over so we all could share that with you.

  3. I love the dark shadow photos!
Think of all the things you wouldn't be able to take photos of just because of the power lines. They're freakin' everywhere! So many "open" fields here for kite-flying and such, and there's a power line or two running across them in the way.

  4. Wow, amazing pictures. Love them.
I like hearing that you are a flash hater. I use my flash ALL the time, but it is just people candids. I like it for people, because their faces light up and their eyes jump out at you, but I need to learn to do that without the flash too...
I am not a photographer yet, just a wannabe! These are inspiring photos.
    Thanks for sharing.

  10. You flash-hater you. Someone should report you. Me, too. The pesky thing always wants to take over. I like the low shot for the perspective although the bug is cool.

  14. Orange is my favorite color lately so I wish I could have been right there in the car with you ... love the shot, wires and all. I just recently have started to hate my flash ... is there a virus going around?

  15. I am a flash hater too! I'll flood something with light just so I don't have to use a flash. Love that last photo..awesome orange sky and I do like the clean of the power lines ;-)

  16. That photo with the orange sky and the power lines is amazing! I cannot believe how orange it is and I Love that you captured the lines with it too!

I agree about the flash... I RARELY use mine, and when I do end up using it, I never like the photos. I try to give it a chance every now and then, but I just hate flash. Sometime I want to try out different flashes... but I don't know much about flash, so I'm not sure when that will happen!

  18. Hi Beth I just like you don't like it when things are 'not in place' in a picture. But yes sometimes when you look at it the second time it just is. Love the way you discribe your feelings with all thes gorgeous pictures.

And about the sun pics I use my sunglasses sometimes as a filter and that gave me some amazings shots ;-) Don't spread the word..

  21. oh Beth, I'm addicted to shots of phone lines, wires, etc., cuz I print them off HUGE then use the wires for journaling lines. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I love the power orange of your shot, too.

  22. These are very dramatic, with great power. And nothing wrong with accidentally catching an insect in flight.

  23. That's pretty cool! I try to avoid flash all the time, too. And with big ol' digital things -- they STILL say don't look directly at it, but it's right THERE!
