formatting and mourning....

my wintertime intermission continues and has yet to disappoint. i know when some people think of florida, hours of laying in the sun in tiny bikinis comes to mind, but that's not what it's like here in the panhandle at this time of year. hence the reason we love it so much.

while i hopefully have your attention for a few minutes, let's talk formatting. did you know that when you delete your photos from your camera, you should never use the delete button. the delete button is fine to get rid of a few individual photos every now and then, but when you're done with a large group of photos {you've downloaded them to your computer} and you're ready for a fresh start on your memory card, go to formatting instead of deleting. formatting will delete all your photos, while keeping your memory card very happy. i don't know the super fancy technical reason to do this, but i know it's important.

there's a huge group of us who are very disappointed and would love to give google a kick in the ass...me being one of them...for taking away picnik. picnik was a great online editing program, used by adoring flickr fans, and isn't like any other editing program out there. honestly, i loved it more then anything photoshop has ever done for me.
so, sometime next week, i will be sharing all of the online editing programs i have found and have been testing, that are user friendly and similar to picnik.
i don't know about you, but april 19th i'll be wearing black while i mourn.

  1. Yeah, that picnik thing was a surprise. And formatting? So I guess you can do this from the camera? I'll have to check into this, cause I use the delete button. Florida is looking good from here. Ejoy

  2. gorgeous stuff here, but i must say, as someone who is part owner of a photo lab, the fact that people don't know how to really delete images has made heroes of us more times than i can count, we having a program to find those lost, not yet really deleted images. on the other hand, after someone has downloaded all their "personal" stuff, please, please, format away. please. ;-)

    xoxo

  3. Thanks for the great tip about formatting! I general delete when I've downloaded but there are times I have forgotten...so formatting it shall be!

And yes to mourning the loss of picnik...it's been such a great program to use...and thanks for doing the scouting about and sharing what you find. Black arm bands shall be worn the day the "ants" take over picnik... ;(

  4. I learned that tip about formatting the memory card when I first got my camera 4 years ago. I still have all my original cards and they've never given me a minute's problem. Very good tip to share with others!

I love that last photo. Absolute perfection.

Sorry about Picnik! I hadn't heard that they were removing it. Hope you find a suitable replacement.

  5. If you have a Google+ account and load photos there, you will see the 'Creative Kit' in the upper left hand corner. It's just like Picnik but without their Premium options. Hopefully Google will be expanding on this. Good luck!

  7. I was devestated about picnik, I absolutely rely on it. (Not to mention that I'd just got a membership as a gift one week earlier! No sign of my refund yet ...) The Creative Kit replacement is useless to those of us who have used picnik seriously for processing.

I downloaded Paint.net and so far it's pretty good. Not a perfect replacement for picnik with its intuitive and easily categorised settings, and I still haven't worked out how to get the luscious effects like cross processing and Orton that I could on picnik ... but it's pretty good. I've heard Gimp is better, but I am not a linear, mathematical kind of person, so I find it bewildering.

  8. I am so sad about picnik, and I can't imagine how it wasn't doing well, everyone uses it! I paid for the "extra" stuff even! Very curious to read what you have found that might be similar. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. you're right, you know, this IS the best time of year in florida (and thanks for the tip about the memory card, i absolutely didn't know that.)

  10. The deleting of photos...I have always deleted photos from my camera after they have uploaded to iPhoto. It prompts me if I wish to delete from the camera (not sure the exact words). I don't know how the process is done that way.

I have often wondered how long to keep using the same memory card before I should replace it. Any thoughts?

I'm bummed too. I just discovered Picnik and have found it so easy to use. I really dislike Picasa and have made too many stupid mistakes with the files when I downloaded onto my desktop. I corrected that by dumping it into the trash. I have only been using Picnik since then. I understand that Google says they will have a program that will incorporate the best of picknik...we shall see but I will be all eyes with what you share!

  12. I love those mushrooms! So sad about picnik...I loved making collages there...so easy. I look forward to reading about other editing programs. I will admit that I loooove photoshop. Oh yes...I always reformat my cards! Enjoy the sun...can you believe it's 50 today in Chicago? What winter?

  13. I find it comforting to know I am not alone in feeling completely bummed out about picnik. And now I have to admit that I don't even know what you mean about "formatting". I really think I need to hire an assistant. Hahaha. No, really.

  14. I was upset when I read about Picnik, but now I realize that it will force me to learn Photoshop Elements or Photoshop. Yes, I'm mourning too!

  15. I am still in shock about Picnik, it's been my editing friend for so long. I never could get a handle on Photoshop. Picnik was so easy, so simple and very straightforward.

I love Florida the way you show it to us, Beth.

  16. Thanks for the formatting info. Didn't know that.

Picnik. I don't use it enough -- don't really have the time, but I know we use it at work, and our photo guy said they were coming up with something new. I'll let you know when I hear about that one -- you may already know.

My verification word is "undinted" which reminds me of "undaunted" which reminds me of you and finding photo software. You WILL get the right thing!

  17. I know so many people who are upset about picnik. I've never used it, but will be happy to point readers in your direction. Also saw some alternatives on another blog or two.
Lovely group of photos here. I think I'd like Florida for that very reason. From what you've been showing, I certainly don't think of sand and bikinis when I think of this part of Florida ~

  18. okay, I totally feel like I've dressed up in a bunny costume for a party that is not a costume party (name that movie reference!). I have no idea about picnik or anything else since I'm not a photographer. All I know is I enjoy looking at the results of whatever it is all you great photographers are doing or using or what-have-you!

  19. I was really surprised about Picnik too. :0(

    Love the mushroom pics.
