like coloring without a box of crayons...

by now
we've all been hit with the texture bug
and
i thought i'd show you what happened when i mixed a little of this with a little of that
this is a fantastic texture
but
not the easiest to use on just any photo
due to the coloring in it

but
when i rotated it and mixed it with this old wagon wheel
ummm
what's the old saying
"everything old is new again"
~~
and
WOW
you all blew me away with your request for
a "simple as vanilla pudding" aperture tutorial
which my sweet and adorable hubby with a great big smile on his face
informed me there really isn't such a thing
but
i promise next week to prove him wrong
by
doing my absolute best to teach
an aperture 101 class
~
did you know that i'm a dental assistant
~
oh
this is going to be so interesting
*
and
real quick
for those of you seriously interested in aperture learning
please tell me what camera you have and what lens/lenses you use
~
thanks a bunch

  1. Beth,
    You are so kind.
I have a Nikon D40 , the lens it came with, and one zoom lens .
Looking forward to what I know will be a great tutorial.

  2. I suspect you're going to get quite a variety of cameras and lenses to think about. I understand the concept of aperture but tend to play it safe-ish and keep my camera set to shutter speed preferred. It's a Canon EOS 50D. I use 17 to 85mm and 70 to 300mm lenses. Thanks for taking this on.

  3. Beth, I absolutely love what you did with this photo and Jerry Jones' texture. Oh, it's beautiful.
I shoot on auto mode because I don't know how to work the camera. I have a Nikon D80, and assorted lenses: 60mm macro, 50mm lens, 18-55 kit lens, 70-300 mm.

  4. Beth: Just found your blog through Kamana's Journaling through Photos. I am raising my hand holding a Nikon D40 with a 18-55 and a Nikor 70-300 lens. I'm dancing silly like (okay NOT---because it is way past my bedtime and DH is snoring a few yards away)for more info on aperture.

  5. Well are you generous. I was just thinking a few days ago-"I wish Beth would teach how to do a blog header banner' so you must have picked up the teaching vibe--so thanks for offering the aperature lesson. I have a Canon Rebel with a 18-200mm zoom and I have extension rings for macro work.

  8. I've taken several photography classes in the past, including one forensic photography class at the morgue in Miami about 15 years ago...it seems, however, with my Canon Power Shot S3IS, I do most things on the auto setting. I have a Canon EOS Rebel with several lenses that I haven't used in years....and an old Pentax P3, also with several lenses, that I loved in my youth.

  9. Love the altered photo!!! I have a Canon Rebel with two lenses. One is a EFS 18-55mm and the other escapes me right now. But it is more wide angle.
    I also have a Coolpix with a Nikkor 3X optical zoom 6.3 - 18.9mm which I use quite a bit.

  10. I can see I am way out of my league with my little Canon Power Shot SD630 no extra lenses. Maybe I don't have the right equipment for the wonderful transformation work you are going to tutor but I want to learn it anyway. I may get a different camera some day.

  11. Love how you've termed it the 'texture bug'. Yes - we've all been 'bitten'. Excellent work!!

  12. You are amazing, Beth.
I love you and that beautiful heart.
    Happy Wednesday.

  13. Oh yes, that photo + that texture = perfection.
I have a Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm lens that came with, plus a 60mm macro lens (that does not have auto focus). It never hurts to learn more...and I am still saving up for a telephoto, and then, you will have to teach us about your bird shots!

  14. Like the way that photo turned out ... just a hefty Kodak point and shoot here ... but still interested in learning.

  15. This is wonderful! I don't have photoshop -- just the little program on my computer, which I have a devil of a time managing, but I try! You inspire me.

Camera -- I'm just curious because on my little Canon instant digital it has a manual area. That's about all I know on it, because I usually use other settings.

i'm always amazed with how you transform your pictures in such interesting ways.

  17. it's looking like you are going to have a tough time with some of the cameras not having a low enough apeture setting.

    love the texturing!

  18. ok... I want to know how to do the texturing... i see it all over the place but don't even know where to start. I don't have photoshop... is it in GIMP??? I'm gingerly stepping into the GIMP world. :)

I just recently found and fell in love with Picnik. He and I get along like two peas in a pod when it comes to layering. No fuss, no muss...just drop and drag. I also tend to shoot way too often on aperture priority (I'm such a slut when it comes to ease) so teach away and I will promise to keep my eyes open. Nikon d5000 (which you probably already know) with an additional 55-200zoom.

  25. Hello Sweet Beth,
Oh my goodness, everytime I come back to visit your blog, I get inspired all over again. I love photography and your photos are absolutely beautiful. I use a Canon EOS Rebel XT digital camera. It has a 35-80mm lens attached. Thank you for this generous offer. I look forward to learning from you!
With happiness at the end of a busy day,
    Rebecca

  27. It is amazing how so many things that I would walk by and not think twice about make for such a wonderful image--an old wheel against a weathered fence: a great look.

  29. Love this texturized photo Beth!...I have been having fun playing with textures lately and have been loving Shadowhouse Creations free textures...Guess you can say that I caught the bug:)

I've taken several classes but always feel like I'm still learning...especially with my new Canon XSi just have the kit lens for now...

  30. I have a Canon Rebel with the lens it comes with, a macro lens, a wide angle lens, and a telephoto lens. Don't ask me the numbers. I can't wait to learn more. I know you can do it.

  32. Hi Beth,
Glad I was getting caught up with your posts! I did finally opt for Aperture and am learning to use it. I have a Sony 100 SLR and use an 18-250 lens.

  33. I have yet to be hit with the texture bug, but I want to be hit so badly! I see it in your work and some other great blogs we both know. I am fine with aperture, but if you want to teach texture I'm ready! :) I feel so un-hip! I love that you are teaching a little photo class on here though, so very cool!!

  34. Hi Beth - I think I misinterpreted your post. You are talking about aperture on the camera, not the Aperture program! Sorry! But, yes - I did get the Mac Aperture.

  35. nikon d40. looking forward to this.

  36. Cool what you've done here Beth. I love textures but I'm the most proud of myself when a picture is just perfect with no changing it at all.

But yea it's a bug for sure ones if found you.
