there will be tears.....

tomorrow our sweet girl leaves for australia and there will be tears, lots of them, but first i have to  share the yucky faces created when many of us decided to try her vegemite. the family she'll be working for sent her a wonderful care package last week, and personally i gravitated towards the boomerang when i read "yeast extract" as to what vegemite actually is...so with family and friends gathering for one last good-bye on sunday, we decided we just had to give it a try. no toast, no crackers, just fingers with globs of vegemite. believe me, toast would not have made it taste better.

only a few of us were brave enough to try this australian spread and well, let's just say, it was awful. i tried it, but since i was taking the photos, there isn't a photo of my face. let's just say it's safe to say that it was very familiar to those below.

her friend getting ready

her friend done and now reaching for her bottled water

now my mom doesn't seem to be too phased based on this photo, but i did hear her say, yuck.

my little sister really knows how to sum up what vegemite tastes like.

our son's girlfriend was grossed out, but laughed throughout the taste test.

my nephew...well he had his water ready and instantly tired to remove the taste from his tongue.
guess what, it's not that easy...but chocolate chip cookies remove the taste :)

our daughter, "brave brave girl, i'm going to australia, i can eat vegemite" hated it, too.
~~
i think it's safe to say that we need to send peanut butter, almond butter and nutella in the first care package that leaves our house.

  1. There will be multi care packages flying from the US to Australia. That stuff is gross..no other word for it. We all tried it many years ago and couldn't get over how people could actually eat and LIKE it!! Best of everything to your lovely daughter...on to her adventure. Mine leaves in just under 2 weeks...we will be strong mama, we will!! xo

  3. I have never tried vegemite; your care packages will be greeted with smiles, I am sure. How wonderful for your daughter to live in Australia, that is a country of great beauty and contrasts that I would like to visit.

  4. I've never heard good things about the taste of vegemite, but I believe Australians look upon it as being one of their national treasures. LOL

  5. "Do you come from the land down under"...

you know the song right? It does happen to mention vegemite sandwiches...lol...

Safe travels and great new adventures to your girl - xo

  6. Well,I've only been to Australia briefly - flew into Sydney and spent a few days there before departing on a cruise that stopped in Melbourne and Hobart, Tasmania ( breathtakingly
beautiful, Wish I had been able to spend weeks there. The ship went on to New Zealand, another spectacular country and I got to stay a few days at the end in Auckland. Great wines in both countries - I am such a wine aficionada....now vegemite has never appealed to me. I had it in England.

I know you will be making use of skype which keeps me in good touch with family and friends at home while I'm in India....still here till the 1st of Dec. Monsoon rains are FINALLY slowing down.

  7. Good grief, all I have to do is look at pictures of your family and I can tell who is connected to you and who is (as Rick would call it) a cling-on! What a resemblance you share!

Australia -- how long? What an exciting adventure -- I suspect you'll share more than a few tales. I hope so! Wish her bon voyage!

  9. Lol. Vegemite is not as good as Marmite (the Kiwi version) but its still pretty good. I couldn't live happily without one of the other. I think you Americans have some strange foods preferences - eg peanut butter with jelly. Yuck!!

    ;-)

I hope your daughter has a safe and wonderful adventure!

  10. I've lived here (Australia) for nearly 45 years and I still can't eat vegemite....I think it's like being a local in a small town, you have to be born to it maybe!!! We have peanut butter and nutella but not almond butter, now that sounds interesting..
Safe travelling for your girl, she's going to love my country I'm sure..
    xx

  11. I tasted Vegemite when in Australia. I was visiting cousins. I hated the stuff, and they assured me there was plenty of other great foods and I would not have to eat the stuff. Aussie kids eat it like our kids eat peanut butter - or Nutella.

  12. That looks terrible and doesn't sound too good either. :-(

Did I miss a post? Why is your daughter moving to Australia to work? For how long? And will you be going to visit? That would be an awesome trip!!

  19. Thinking of you and sharing your crumbled heart as we figure out how to let go of them. Thankfully Skype makes it slightly less painful. I've been in his room exactly twice since he's been gone. I wanted to smell his pillows.

It would be interesting to learn the history behind the vegemite. The Aussies don't know what good eatin' is!

This will be a wonderful opportunity for her of immeasureable memories and enlightenment. She is a beautiful young woman, like her mother.

  21. Love the different expressions. We had marmite in the UK which is basically the same thing. One of those that you either love of hate. Me I hate it but oddly enough I love Twiglets which are covered in yeast extract, bizarre.

I know it will be hard saying goodbye to your daughter but like my own mother and I we keep in touch constantly even though countries and oceans apart.

  22. Sounds gross, beth! I do want to see your face, though! Your daughter is BEAUTIFUL!!!

  23. Those expressions are SO spot on--and funny!

  24. Smiling reading this, I know exactly how you're feeling. Remember, skype. It eases the pain, but I don't know how to ease your vegemite pain.

  25. I'm so excited for your daughter and I hope you get to visit! I have a good friend from Australia ( Byron Bay Area ~ I may visit this winter :) My friend lived with me for 6 months and she turned me on to Promite a milder version of Vegemite. I loved it thinly spread on a thick tortilla topped with avacado.

Ohh you must miss her so much and I bet your so looking forward to hear about her adventures -- sending love to you both ~ ~ ~

  26. Great post and so great of the tasters to let you post their pictures (I assume you asked them). I worked with an Aussie once who told me about Vegemite. Did you know it's mentioned in the hit song, "Down Under" by Men at Work.

  27. Well, as an Australian I'll just have to jump of the defence of Vegemite. I have it every other morning for breakfast, but it has to be on toast which has been buttered. I think where people go wrong is they put too much on - you just need a scrape! Even Australians wouldn't eat it 'straight'. I do guess it's something you have to grow up with though. Wonder where in Australia your daughter is coming to - I'm from Melbourne. Hope she has a great time!

  28. You have this Australian smiling! As Pauline says, you have a tiny scraping of vegemite on buttered toast or crackers, definitely not straight! Lots of peanut butter and Nutella in Australia - even several kinds of Oreos and many other familiar foods are common in our supermarkets.
Hope she has a great time!

  29. That stuff is nasty! I do not get why they love it so.

  30. LOL!
I've always wondered what that stuff is.
    Now I'm even more curious!
