the hubby and I took a "careful where you step" walk this weekend
on the lake
where the wind was cold
and
the ice was slippery
and
where hundreds of people were ice fishing
we didn't have
a bucket to sit on
a pole to fish with
a drill to make a fishing hole
a sled to carry all the things we didn't have
or
a shovel to clear away snow from the perfect "spot"
but
I did have my camera
and
that was all I needed
when making a conversation with one of the men
who told us these
"are some good eating fish"
and
"they're really biting today"

do you have any idea how much I love strangers
I really really do
and
if my fingers hadn't been numb when I took this photo of his fish
I would have taken his photo
too

next time
and
there will be a next time
I promise

after all
it is wisconsin
and
the lakes will be frozen until june

Such a stark contrast between the white of the ice and snow and the colorful pop of people and their clothing! A camera was all that was needed :) Everyone has a story, and the wonderful thing about getting to know a stranger is hearing their story unfold!

wow, having only ever lived in ga and az and now italy -- hard for me to wrap my head around this being so popular. sitting and fishing on ice...brrrrrrrr.
That's amazing. And, that ice won't crack or anything? These photos really grabbed my attention this morning!
I simply can't comprehend why people would sit on the ice for hours, be still and just hold a fishingpole? It would be to cold for me and I was born without patience.
But it looks nice to me all these folks on the ice. I've only know it from the tv. So thanks for letting me have a peek again into your Wisconsin life.
I agree...that is amazing!! And it looks so cold...I had to refill my coffee cup just to warm my hands!! LOL! Great pics though!

That is amazing, however, I'd probably be one of those people who are paranoid about the ice breaking and falling into the ice cold water.

Now I know why you were talking about fishermen on Chars blog. The best thing of this are the fabulous pictures and the brave souls.
That is so cool you guys ice fish. I'm so terrified of falling through the ice to my certain death...I don't think I will likely get past that to ever fish while standing on ice. I can't even imagine it. So it's cool to see people actually doing it! :)
I just don't get ice fishing...don't get it at all...lol. Some people have such tough hides! Great shots!

I have a friend from MN who loves to go ice fishing. They have a little cabin close to their favorite spot, fortify themselves with hot buttered rum and spend the whole day out in the cold. They say it is great fun. Your pictures make it seem so!
Wow, that's some serious cold to be sitting outdoors on a bucket to ice fish! What happened to the little shacks in which to sit? New Englanders like to use those!!
I love this!! My friend's husband ice fishes up in the Twin Cities and she has told me stories of taking the snowmobile out to the perfect spot- loaded up with a heater (ok- THAT and the ice would make me nervous), tent, and all kinds of other accessories. uite an ordeal, but so popular. Great pictures!
ok, I am freezing in California... I could not do that. I would be frozen for a week.

You know, I can't even imagine a winter like this. Makes me cold just thinking of it. Yesterday we were out and about wearing long sleeved shirts and no coats. What a wonderful, diverse country we live in.
