bootie call.....

as in i wore my uggs today
*
it's the first day of spring and here in madison, our high today was forecasted to reach nineteen degrees and our low tonight is to come in around six pathetic and ridiculous degrees. well, that's only if you exclude the windchill factor. factor it in, and it will feel like ten below.

last year at this time, mother nature and i were really wonderful friends, but this year, well i'm utterly disgusted with her. she's been really cruel to so many of us these past six months and i'm starting to wonder how she sleeps at night.

last week i couldn't handle the cold and yet another snowstorm, so i ran to our fantastic nursery for some relief. unfortunately, while shopping for what i knew would make me smile, i knocked over a beautiful iris, the only one in a clay pot, which of course broke into tiny pieces when it hit the concrete floor and was actually smiled at by the "floor guy" who said "i've got it, no problem."

i have a feeling he's been taught how to handle cooped up, sick of winter, hormonal woman because he did it beautifully and if he hadn't, i might have fallen to the concrete with the clay pot and then he would have really had his hands full.

did you know i have a green thumb? well, i do. it's one of many gifts. snort. i was just watering our huge palm, that lived out on our screened in porch last summer, and smiling at the fact that it has survived beautifully all winter inside with me. she'll be moved back outside next month {if mother nature gets her act together} and then i think i might have to get another one, as there will be such a lonely and empty corner in our family room without her.

  1. Yeah, Mother Nature is being kind of mean right now. And passive aggressive. But mostly mean.

  2. I spent the morning at an Orchid nursery. It was delightful to bask inside where it was sunny and super warm cuz today its a crazy 14 degrees here in Chicago. Brrr....

  3. Your container garden of indoor plants is very attractive, and your sense of humor got me smiling. You mention Madison, is that Madison, Wisconsin? I know there are other Madisons, but I attended UW-Madison, as did my dad before me.

  4. What an incredibly sweet nursery guy. Yes, I suspect they see a good deal of crazed people coming in about now! I'll be off this weekend to find something pretty. Something to make me smile, because this cold, blowy, not-particularly sunny, snowy weather has me in a terrible funk. I am cold all the time, no matter how high I crank the heat.

The photos are wonderful -- loving all the pinks and greens against your white background. I can't wait till I can carve out some time to change my template! But that'll have to wait a bit -- for now, I'll get some calm lovely from you!

  5. Those kind of temperatures in March are just WRONG! I would not be nice at all if Mother Nature kept me indoors that much.

  6. love your plantings. so pretty. you must come here and help me with that department. i have NO green thumb, but i really want to incorporate true plant growing in this mid-century modern home, as that is the kind of thing that was quintessential for these ranches in that period.

anyhoo, sorry about your migraines. through the years, i've known several who have them. i can't imagine living with that, since i'm a real baby when i have even just a regular random headache that will go away with the pop of an advil or two. i'm glad you have good support, though.

so... what's this flash bounce attachment you speak of??

  7. Have I ever told you that just the title of your blog is enough to make my day?

And your images here just breathe spring for me. I chuckled at the thought of you on the floor with that poor broken pot, and the clerk wondering what to do....so much for the imagination to dwell on.

  8. Lucky guy to know how to deal with the broken pot/flower issue! And lucky plants to have you around. My thumb is not so green, but my husband's is. He keeps plants growing in our sunroom during the winter, and they go back out to the deck when the weather warms up. You two have a gift!

  9. So glad you had a nice nursery guy. Nothing worse than a surly employee to make you feel even worse about an accident.

I've not commented in a while but I'm still here :-) lovin' your photos and lovin' your "human" characterizations of things such as the weather. So poetic and my zapped brain cannot recall what you call that: giving human qualities to things.

I know what you mean about the fogginess. Wish I knew how to get rid of it. Mine is a problem in and of itself and not the results of meds. Although I am on those but would sink like a rock without them. I continue to remind myself that there are much worse things and am thankful for my blogger friends :-)

    Cheers!

  12. I have a green thumb too.. houseplants really make a home, don't ya think? When I visit a home without them, I want to bring something to the table...lol.. sort of a like a dog or cat, too.

I have 100 year old cast iron plants that were given to my great grandmother as an engagement gift! LOVE your terrarium.

  13. It's been cold and snowy here too, but today, we have brilliant sunshine, so hopefully some of the snow will melt, and I will be able to see my crocuses again!

Such beautiful light in all of these wonderful photographs, Beth!

I am sorry to hear you've not been feeling well. I get about 2 or 3 migraines a year, and they are oh so nasty. I hope yours are gone soon.

  14. Enjoyed all the different angles of the plants. Sorry that winter is being such a brat lately. I have a similar problem, but it's the summer heat/humidity that makes me cranky and irritable. That and the bugs. Hope you feel better soon and that spring will come and lift you up. Hugs!

  15. A visit to the flower shop or nursery is the best medicine for winter angst and the anticipation of spring. I do hope your spring comes soon, just for you. I can't imagine those temperatures, I would be climbing the walls.

  16. Never trust a groundhog!! Early spring my arse! hee!!

I'm just craving sunshine that lasts...and then everything else will fall into place. And I've started wearing my coat "undone", even with the cold wind...I'm declaring it spring even if the weather says "you're daft!".

Loving your plants...bring the spring to you!!!

  17. You always make me giggle... It's so nice to see plants. I'm not speaking to spring just now. She has issues.

  18. you certainty do have a green thumb. I am a bit envious. Plants and I don't seem to get along all that well. Love seeing all the green together, especially when things around here are still snow covered. I am doing the spring dance...hoping it arrives soon.

  19. There's nothing like a little green inside, when it is so white outside.
