photography tip friday.....

move yourself
~
the photo above is right out of the camera {sooc} and was taken after i shot the one below and realized the side of the chair next to me was right smack dab in the middle of my photo.

if this had been the only photo i had taken, i would have cropped the chair out of the photo and been left with just a lady and her newspaper without any depth what so ever.
~
but
with every tip, just like art, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
there will be some of you who like the chair in the photo and the fact that you can see the art hung on the back wall and that's perfectly okay and i can't say that that's wrong.
for me though, in the bottom photo, my eye goes right to the chair and that's not what i had intended to be my focal point.
don't you love the fact that with photography we can do what we like to do and love what we love and if there are rules to follow, the sky won't come crashing down on us when we don't.
~
so tell me, just for kicks, what photo do you like best.

  1. I'm with you, I love the first one best. I'm probably the queen of crop but you've reminded me that sometimes it pays to just move my lazy butt!

  2. well... i like both of them... i like the wall of artwork tucked in the background of the second one; yet, I like how I fall into that newspaper and "read with her" in the first one...what can i say beth, i simply appreciate all of your work and perspectives!
    -xok.

  3. Oh. The first one. The one you liked best. I love the way her head is tilted at about the same angle as the anatomical illustration in her newspaper. LOVE that. And the newspaper points into the rest of the photo instead of being cut off at the tip. If the newspaper hadn't been cut off in the bottom image, I would be torn because then the chair would frame her and I like that. but the newspaper does it for me.

Hey! This is like being back in college! Critique day! :)

  4. I like the top image. Your right my eye does go right to that chair in the bottom image.

  5. I like the top one and that you can see in the distance.

  6. I love photography tip Friday, it really makes me think when using the camera. And my choice would be #1, just too much chair in the other.

  7. yup, i like the top one because your eye goes to the enrapt woman then forward into the open room.

I like the top photo.... it leads you into the rest of the room and the stores beyond.

  9. Sure have me here looking Beth. Im going to be different. I like the second one . The first my eye goes right out beyond the Lady and the Paper right away. So it take me away , the second one keeps the focus on the Lovely women, with the paper ..
    Both are very nice.

I'm totally with you. The second one doesn't have any depth and my eyes are searching for a focal point. It also doesn't tell a story. The first tells the story of someone waiting in an airport.

    Good example!

i like the one you like :) she feel so engaged in her reading from that perspective, which engages me

  12. Hey Beth, I agree with most everyone,
and a big fan of the crop tool. Having that bit of open space in front of this lovely lady makes it feel like she is tucked back in a little nook. Very good tips you are sharing, much appreciated!

  13. for me, it's less about the chair and more about the lady and the way she's sitting, so i like them both.

  14. i do like them both...but for some reason i like the second one with the art work on the wall...loving these Friday Photo Days....

have a great weekend, my friend

  15. I, too, prefer the first photo. The contrast in the shades of grey scale are more visually appealing to me. I like wondering if this is at an airport or a big box bookstore.

  16. well, i love photos that tell a story, especially photos about people. so the first photo is my favorite. i focus first on the lady reading her newspaper, and then i look beyond her to see where she is and what she's doing there.

i think the chair in the foreground in the second photo is distracting, even though i do like seeing the art in the background. but to me, at least, that art is secondary to the "real" story of this photo.

i love when you do these little mini-photography sessions. you'd be a great teach!

  17. Well, I like the art on the wall so I think I would have photographed the lady from a different angle so I wouldn't have gotten so much of the chair but woud have captured more of her and managed more of the art on the wall as well - if that were possible.

  18. Great tip! Move yourself and get different angles. I like the exposure in the 2nd one, but I prefer the first one also because we have more of a field of view as to what's in front of her.

  19. While I do like the bottom photo, the chair does seem to grab your eye. The top one, your eye goes right to the subject.

  20. Composition is important : )

  21. It's funny, at first I thought you were saying the top photo was the mistake, and I was perplexed because the composition seemed to me to be so very much better, whereas I thought the second one looked like ... well, a mistake. So I guess that tells you which one I prefer :-)

  22. I'm going with the top photo for a thousand, Alex.
But I do like the wall display in the bottom photo. do not like the blurry chair.

  23. Great tip and great photo - don't ya love when it's that easy!

  24. I'm with you on the top photo without the chair. The image seems crisper and more intentional than the one with the chair.
And, the depth. Better on the one without the chair.

  25. the first one, you nailed it! although both are beautiful...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Definitely the first one. It tells more of a story. When I put the camera up to my eyes I always remember something someone once told me. Look through the lens and how it is framed and if it doesn't please you move around until you get a view that pleases you. That has stuck in my head for sure. Still sometimes I do end up taking several shots just to make sure. Love your tips.

  27. I like the first one. The first think I see in the second photo is the chair. Is this taken in an airport???

  28. I'm with you on the first photo too. The greatest thing that ever happened to my picture taking skills was the invention of digital. I just keep clicking away til I get a good shot. In the old days I spent way too much on a roll of 36 pic only to have one (or none!) turn out decent.

    Thanks for the tip.

  29. The first one. The art in the second is distracting from the focal point, the lady. Nice tips! xo Jenny

  30. in this case, I like the first one; if the chair in the foreground were a more interesting chair, I could see having it in there; and if the artwork added "needed" perspective or if it seemed to be significant in terms of the rest of the content of the photo, then I could see having it in it. But in this particular shot, they seem to be just some extra clutter...

    but that's just me :)

  31. I know I commented here before...Blogger must have eaten it!

I like each of the photos and if you hadn't mentioned the flaws I probably wouldn't have noticed to tell you the truth! I have to say the chair is somewhat annoying but I like that angle the best...so I have to choose the second as my favorite...but only if I am forced to pick a favorite!

Just reallized that on my last comment I think I picked the first as my favorite:)

  32. My eye does travel right to the chair and it does feel "in the way to me." My first thought was "crop..." but an even more experienced person such as yourself does one better and simply reframes the shot... ahhh lesson learned :) I see it in my hubbies work all the time... 15 variations of essentially the same image, but different in varying degrees.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like the second one...it seems more real....more life like.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i'm with you on this one. i can't tell you how many times i've wished i had a step stool with me, or someone would move a car or cut down that tree...ha!

  35. Great blog !

  36. totally love the one where you moved...and it makes sense to do that. Yes, you could have cropped out the chair (cropped the chair out?? lol!), but it changes the entire composition.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the top - not only because your eye is drawn to the woman, rather than the chair, but also because you can see that she's in a large space, waiting....

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love the second photo because of all the white space in front of her paper....it really focuses on her reading THE PAPER....I love that!

    ReplyDelete
  39. so I love the first image, top one...lotsa white, empty carpet space...makes me really pull into her newspaper...the subject...HER reading THE newspaper!I love ya!
