it was the middle of the night and I was all alone. the pain was excruciating. worse than a migraine or maybe the same, but just different. i got up and walked around, went to the bathroom, let the dog out and climbed back into bed.

i thought that too
but sometimes you have to show yourself who's boss

Over four years ago hubby and I cut out all sugar and all sugar substitutes. We used only honey for those times we had to have sweet. We made cookies with honey. Not often but occasionally. We read all labels. For two years we were sugar free. I felt so great. Then in August 2008 hubby had his horrible manic episode and he was eating every candy bar and drinking sodas and every piece of sugar crap he could get into his mouth. The first time he let me in on his secret sugar diet I almost fell over. But in order to get along when he pushed me to join in the candy and coke fest I did. It made me sick the first few times but as the manic episode got worse and he ended up in the hospital for three weeks I didn't care about much of anything and ate things with sugar. The two year healthy lifestyle was over. Today we use honey and a very little sugar. Hubby craves sugar items but I do not. I like chips and crackers. But sodium is my enemy. I admire your open mind to learn about the sugar addiction and to take the steps to clean your system of sugar. So many people just do not know the power of the seduction of sugar.

Sounds like you may be detoxing too fast. Slow down, be easy on yourself. If you didn't have to go cold turkey--what does want to happen?

ReplyDeleteHey, I love Body & Soul!! I always cut out the last page, the colorful Ten Thoughts page, you know...and string them on jute string across my wall. Kinda like bigger Tibetan prayer flags, only healthy living reminders! I love it! My office is so much more colorful now!
And, no chewing Mentos heard. Will do. Errr...won't do.

ReplyDeleteI have been trying to do the same thing, buying more organic, eating less meat, but not going vegan...and I am a sugar addict as well... but have cut way down, not cut out completely. I think the plan never works if you go cold turkey from day one. Treat yourself every day to one of something from the bad catagory. Everything in moderation is the key.
ReplyDeleteYour'e so funny! Ugh, my mother, when I was like 5, took sugar out of our diet... from cereal, to white bread, to cake and cookies and candy and all of it gone in a flash for years... cold turkey is HARD.
ReplyDeleteI hated it then... but now love the fact sugar does not have a hold on me. Once you are rid of it... the cravings subside and you won't miss it like you think you will! Be patient with the process!

ReplyDeleteon the 'fix' issue - had a friend who was hooked on (the sugar and caffeine in) Coca-Cola and decided to give it up. she had wicked headaches and the shakes! eventually she defeated her addiction and felt SO fantastic...like a veil had been lifted.
those two little ingredients are powerful suckers, aren't they?
The problem with those little menthos is that you can't only eat one...or even only one roll! I've missed a few of your blogs so I'm not sure why you need to give up sugar......but I wish you strength!

ReplyDeleteFrom one recovering sugar-aholic to another ... I've found that I WILL fall off the wagon once in awhile, but the binges aren't nearly as often, and don't last nearly as long when I'm conscious of what I'm doing. :)
