if you're allergic to shellfish, make sure that information is on your medical records chart. our son suffered a terrible and very scary allergic reaction from the contrasting dye {omnipaque} used for his ct scan {to determine whether or not he had appendicitis} on wednesday, because we only had fish oil supplements listed as an allergy. iodine is the correlation between the two and since we're still learning about all of this ourselves, here's a great link for those of you who don't know anything about this.
he did have appendicitis and unfortunately he's also had some recovery complications, but it looks like later this afternoon we'll finally get to take him home. my hubby and i together, have been by his side constantly, with only two "tag, your it" moments, as obviously he's our number one priority right now...and he's our baby boy. don't get funny...he's sleeping right now, which is why i'm typing :)
for those of you who have never had the opportunity to ride in an ambulance, with lights flashing and horns honking, while your son is hooked up to monitors {after being injected with epinephrine, benedryl and steroids} ...i hope you never do.
to all of my facebook friends, who have sent so many well wishes, happy thoughts and prayers {after i posted a quick update} thank you so very much. i hope you know how much that mean to us.

Your poor baby...because when something like this happens...I don't care how old the man is, he is your baby. So glad that you and dad were there to take care of it all.
ReplyDeleteThe allergic reaction to that stuff is scary beyond belief. I didn't know what it was called but had a similar reaction years ago when the dye was injected to check the flow from my kidneys to my bladder. I felt like I was having a heart attack and the nurse had the epi pen ready. The technician kept saying it was nothing...it was something. I'd had 2 smaller, similar reactions from CT scans and my family doctor told me I was to never, ever have that stuff, ever again or it would kill me.
I had to have the dye injected when I had an angiogram 8 years ago and I was scared to death -- in every way. They shot me full of benadryl and other steriods, had an epi ready BUT this dye had apparently been changed from the original and I was fine. Does that mean I still think it's safe? Not on your life or mine!!!
Glad he's going to be okay Beth and thank heavens for everyone being alert! xoxo
Sorry to hear that you went through such a scary time with your boy but glad to know that all turned out okay in the end.
ReplyDeleteI've had to have that dye and was scared to death after being forewarned about it, but luckily I was okay. I'm sure you must have been scared s*itless! So glad he's okay. Yes, I have ridden in an ambulance when hubby was in the back vomiting and moaning with what turned out to be a twisted colon. Very scary. All I remember is how rude (and oblivious) some drivers are (I was sitting up front). One woman was talking on her cell phone coming from the opposite direction into the intersection where we needed to turn left, but nooooo, she didn't stop...she just drove right through and made us wait (and the sirens were blaring and glaring)...no way did she not see us!!
ReplyDeleteGlad it's basically all behind you now!
Ughhh- hence my apprehension to having scans as frequently as I do. I also did the prescribed pre-steroids and had a very delayed and horrible reaction. I now have to insist they do them with no contrast- and they finally agreed. Prayers continue for recovery and healing and rest for mom and dad :)
ReplyDeleteGosh, I'm so sorry to hear you've been through something so terrifying. So happy to hear that he is on the mend. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your son but glad he is on the mend.
ReplyDeleteSuper Super Scary!! Glad he's on the mend.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to read of this ordeal. I can imagine how terrifying it must have been. Thank goodness he is okay now and I wish him a quick recovery. And the same to you - although I suspect it may be a longer time for you to recover from the stress of it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrifying incident. I am glad your much loved son (and yes, baby boy) is recovering.
ReplyDeleteA mother's worst nightmare, or at least one of them. I'm so sorry to hear about this huge scare for your family. xox
ReplyDeleteWow.... Who da thunk about the shellfish allergy and medical treatment?? Glad he is okay now and I hate it has been such a rough ride!! {{{{{hug}}}}}
ReplyDeleteOh, so scary. I hate that you (and he) had to go through this, but I'm so glad he's doing better. Still saying prayers and sending hugs!
ReplyDeleteI know you're so relieved and thankful that he's over the rough stuff. You just never know what will happen these days when it comes to medications and other complications. I'm praying for him to continue to recover and that things will be back to normal for you all soon.
ReplyDeleteHugs....
I am glad to hear he is able to come home now. And thanks for the reminder...I have updated my medical bracelet! With all my allergies!

Had a scary situation when my youngest was an infant. Oh, my gosh - it tears your heart apart. Glad to hear he's on the mend, Beth!
ReplyDeleteOmg, beth, I hear ya. I am soooo sorry. Prayers sent for your son and all of you. I got injected with the epi pen recently for an antibiotic but I do have the iodine dye allergy, too...ambulance and son don't go together well. I am so sorry. Hope he is doing MUCH better today.
ReplyDeleteI've been in and out of FB and saw one but wasn't sure what was what -- just sending prayers. Glad things are figured out and in the end game there will good news, I trust. But oh -- that concern and fear. We've been there with Greg and Kevin both. there is nothing like it.
ReplyDeleteOh dear god...I didn't realize all the complications! So happy is back at home...nothing is better than Mom's care! Xo
ReplyDeleteamazing as you know that you and i learn so much about the allergies after the actual attacks?! scary :)
ReplyDeleteyou have all been in my thoughts...i cannot imagine the spectrum of emotions this experiences has provided. holding you all in light and sending love, my friend. xx s
ReplyDeleteoh, i do hope your son makes a speedy recovery, beth! i took that ride many years ago with my 6-year-old daughter when she had a reaction to her antibiotics for strep throat. nothing scarier in the world than seeing your baby strapped to a gurney being fussed over by paramedics and her big blue eyes looking at you to make it all better. sure hope your son gets better quick and life gets back to being routine again.
ReplyDeleteHoping your son will make a speedy recovery and sending prayers your way. It does not matter how old he is...he is still your baby...Thinking of you xo
ReplyDeleteSadly - I've had a similar experience with my son riding in an ambulance. Not fun..and one I hope never to repeat ever again!!! So glad to hear that your son is recovering!
ReplyDeleteOh, Beth - I've been mostly offline this past week, and didn't know. I'm so very very glad your son is now on the road to recovery. What a scary thing!
ReplyDeletei have ridden in ambulances .. too many times in a very short period .. glad to hear he is on the mend ... hugs to you, lots and lots of hugs ...
ReplyDeleteOh Beth, I'm so sorry you all went through this, but so glad he is on the mend now.
ReplyDeleteI am going to pass this information on to my dad who is allergic to shellfish... he has never had a ct scan, but that is something I want him to know, just in case he needs one in the future. Thank you.
i hope your baby boy is all better.
ReplyDeleteblessings.
