link loving and real life.....

i was in a pile of tears last night, when wicked sumo wrestling like hormones came to visit. again.
damn it. they had just been here. like a week ago. uninvited as always.
they sit on me and smother me and make me do and say things i shouldn't.
today i'm calling my doctor.
~
if you are a photographer and have an extra ten minutes, watch this guy. he's entertaining and made me feel fantastic by carrying his camera the same way i do. on his shoulder.
i kind of thought i was a freak, as i rarely see others doing that.

today and this weekend, thanks to him, i'm only shooting with my 50mm. i love that little lens of mine and unfortunately, i don't give him enough of my time.
because it's only fair, i'll share a bit of knowledge with you. i won't go into technical details, as that's boring for everyone, but i will give you a little pointer. if you're shooting with a 50mm, your shutter speed should be at 1/50 or faster.
{yes YOU can shoot in manual people. take your camera off AUTO}
also, if you're using your 50mm on a crop sensor camera {which mine is, which means it's not a full frame camera} the 50mm ends up being more like {or i guess equivalent to} a 75mm or 80mm lens.
are you still here, or did i get too technical?
~
ashley's blog is one i have been reading for years. right now her and her husband and their two oldest boys are in china meeting and bringing home their new daughter. you have no idea how exciting this is to all of us who have been waiting patiently with her.
~
also, i've been loving on this tumblr site, even though i hate coffee and this one is great even though i wish his photos were larger. oh, and this song. well it's my number one go-to song right now. the beat gives me the energy i need after one of those damn hormonal takeovers.

happy happy weekend everyone

  1. Sorry about the hormone issues, my Dear.

Probably wise to call your doctor.

And with luck, he/she may be open to natural relief, as well as just the usual pills.

No, I'm not talking about one of those "natural health stores." Our son runs an all-compounding pharmacy, and provides such. Some doctors are open to learning about such.

Good luck to you. I never had those "that time of life" issues, so I can't really appreciate them. But know that many, many, many women have to deal with them. -sigh-

  3. Oh how I wrestled with those hormones...I feel for you sweetie. It's a roller coaster...and your description of it sitting like a sumo wrestler...I could "feel" it. Hope you have a tear free weekend ♥

  4. I'm off to check on other sites you recommended. I hope you get relief soon. I really did like the guy who touts the 20mm. Makes sense.
    take care

  5. Enjoyed each of your links today. Hope you are feeling the groove and better today.
Now thinking about about this 50mm lens. I most of the time use my basic 18-55 mm lens, so what would the difference be? Just curious.

  6. Damn those hormones. Maybe I should make a date with my 50mm. It's really been awhile. Cool tunes. And I love the tumblr site.

  7. after my surgery I had "instant" menopause and it was horrible . After 1 year of HRT I felt worse. So I tried soy isoflavins instead and all symptoms vanished. I used about 3 years and then quit and yep..nothing ever returned...
I used to get at Costco but I'm sure health food stores have them. good luck..yes there is relief  :D

  9. Get out your gigantic sumo diaper and beat those bullies to a pulp!!

Twelve years and counting and I've found solitude is the best way to deal those dudes. I'm thinking solitude with your camera would do wonders for you and for us, your fans!

Good luck and remember, this is not a permanent condition!

  10. Hope you're feeling better....and the camera on the shoulder thing, never saw that before..anywhere. Interesting.

  11. I love that guy discussing the 50mm. I use mine a lot, probably one of my most used lenses, but since I got a new 28mm a couple weeks ago, I've been using that more, trying to get used to it. After listening to him (the dude is funny!), think I'll pop my 50mm back on and get re-aquainted with it.

Have you checked out "Humans of New York"(http://humansofnewyork.tumblr.com)? My daughter got me on to that site, and it's incredible.

Hope you get to feeling better soon, damn those hormones!

  12. I'm so sorry you had a rough evening.
It's never fun to feel like your body and brain are going crazy on you.
Thanks for the great links. I love the mustache cursor on the tumblr site!
    Take care.

  13. I hope you kick those sumo wrestlers to the curb soon and are back to your plucky self. Thanks for the links and the photo tip. I use auto mode too much and need to learn my camera better.

Any tips for shooting action shots in a gym? On sport setting and auto, I can't get it to focus fast enough. My best shots have been on manual, but it's close to impossible to manually focus those fast action shots. (Just checking!)

  15. Well, I am definitely on the cheerleading bandwagon with you for going manual! It's scary at first, but I'm learning to be more patient, and if I screw something up, oh well! I can just delete and try again. I've also learned to read that meter in my viewfinder to help me figure out where my shutter speed should be. I'm lovin' it! The control is something I would not trade and will not go back to aperture priority.

  16. I love my 50mm...it rarely comes off my camera! I hope the doc can help...sucks to feel out of control like that. Ok going to check out the links...I know they will be good! Happy Monday my dear! Xo

  17. I agree with those who have tried the "natural" route, either with soy or bioidentical hormones. There is a compounding pharmacy in Wisconsin, called "Women's Health America," that has a lot of info on their website. You might check into it.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  18. Actually, their hormone department is called "Restore Health." There's a link at the bottom of the page, but here it is for you, if you're interested:

  19. Oh sweetie! So sorry things are like a heavy duty wrestling match for you right now. I hope you find some thing to give you some relief!
You are an amazing photographer and so generous with your knowledge and learning. Love that!
I hope today is an easier on. Love ya!

  20. Somehow I managed to pass through menopause without the grief so many of my friends have had. Personally, I think God just took it out on me in other ways, but what can you do? I'm thinking that photography is a good antidote!

  21. Just playing catch up but stopped to say I hope you got those dang hormones under control! Glad you decided to go to the doctor. I'm a freak in that I mellowed out in menopause - did all my crazy mood swings earlier - but there's so much help out there now. I'm glad you're taking advantage of it. Also wanted to mention that I've been using my 50mm exclusively lately. I'm really not sure why... it's just the mood I'm in, I guess! So funny that you mentioned using yours all the time, too.
