finding your place in this world....

a year ago at this time, he had dropped out of school.
a career in criminal justice just wasn't going to happen.

working full time in construction didn't keep his attention either.
although what he learned in regards to tiling, drywalling, roofing, closet systems, wood working and electrical will make him a wonderful husband someday.

then he got accepted into the music and recording technology program, moved back home
and his life has been changed. our lives have been changed.

to see our child loving what he's doing. wanting to learn. not skipping school. working long hours into the night. well, this is what we prayed for.
~
to watch him do what he does, knowing that what we see at home is just a tiny part compared to what he's doing at school, is a blessing.
only parents of other "where do i go, what do i do now" kids will understand
how proud we are. how happy we are.
because
finding your place in this world...even a tiny parcel of it....is an amazing thing.
a gift actually

thankfully i have a new camera, that can basically shoot in the dark. with an ISO of 1600, there really isn't any noise and with my 50mm 1.4 lens, taking these photos at 11pm was a breeze. the last one was taken with a bleach bypass filter that i don't really like, but made an" in the dark photo" kind of cool. the rest were shot in monochrome mode so that i wouldn't have to do any editing. so yes, these are all sooc. a pentax friend recently played around with my new pentax camera and even shooting at ISO 12800 produced amazing photos.

  1. I'm so happy for your son and for you and your husband that a path has been found...the struggle when we are trying to "make" ourselves be or do something that isn't "right" is frustrating on EVERY level. When you find the place that "fits", everything works as it is meant to.

Sadly, some people never really find that "place" and continue to struggle and keep that struggle inside...and sometimes, we have to find all the things that do not work for us before we come to the place that is "home".

  4. Beth, You can just see your sons wonder and interest in his eyes, which is a great thing. Maybe one day we will know him for his works too, as we know his talented Mother;)

  5. I'm soooo happy for him. Wish computers had been around back in 1972. I would have jumped at the chance to do what your son is now doing... To have found an interest just makes all the difference in the world for a young person. Kudos to you for allowing him to follow his passion.

  6. I think one of the most important things for parents to learn is to allow our children to be "who they are" and find their own joy in the world. It sounds like your son has found one of his joys and that's awesome!

  7. I know EXACTLY what you mean. It's that very industry that awakened the spark in my younger son.. only it was the live venue end of stage production. He studied it.. then they promptly hired him upon graduation and he couldn't be happier. And neither could I. I'm thrilled for you and your boy, Beth. Finding your path is such a gift.

  8. How it warms my heart to see him there, so intent on what he is doing. My son is much older, but it just beginning to become this. Now if he could just make some money and move out on his own.

I always appreciate your descriptions of lens, computer, and camera stuff. You and Christina both are talking 50mm 1.4 lens. I think the photography teacher I have been visiting with lately likes this lens too. I will check with her on Sunday. Thanks!

  11. Yes, not all of us have children who knew what they wanted to do once they graduated from HS. Some of them need to dabble and try out different careers. Some of them have much soul searching and time to mature.

I do understand as I have three grown daughters, all very artistic who look at life with that there is more than just having a job. They want to love what they do. It isn't all about how much money they could, would, should make. It is the path of life and where it leads them.

Each of them are gifted with artistic talent. Drawing, photography, music, yoga/body work/massage therapy. One wants to go to culinary school for pastry work. Youngest son of 15, is into his guitar and computer, following the interest of his sisters. It will be an interesting journey to see where life takes him.

As the parent I do wonder about their future, as when they are my age, how will they live, what they will live on, but it is their life and hey, I don't know everything.

Lastly...I am happy for you all that he has found a path and is taking it with just pleasure and interest.

  13. I totally get how proud you are, I'm so glad. The best piece of advice I ever gave my kids was, "do what you enjoy doing." That's just great he has found his path.
And that camera, iso 1600, showoff!

  14. I worry about all of my children in this regard because you see....
    you just perfectly explained me.

I pray they find their calling, their way, their love. Me? I found love in all of them.

This is a great post. I'm very happy for your son (and his parents).

  21. I was that where do I go, what do I do now kid and my parents were not so patient and pushed me along, forcing decisions. There has to be a balance b/w pushing/guidance and patience/understanding; it looks like you struck the balance; I am happy for you adn your son....

  26. This wonderful, and I am so happy for you and your son. Someone told me once, "no one wants to be a failure" . This isn't profound, but sometimes as parents we think we have to help our kids find success. Sometimes we have to just trust that they will find what they need, when it's time. How many people settle because a job pays well or because they aren't sure what they want to do? Too many. Kudos to your son for searching and not settling.
