see past the pretty...

not always pretty

we ourselves
aren't always pretty
yet we seem to choose the pretty things to photograph
flowers~sunsets~clouds~rainbows~oceans
you know
the pretty things
~~
but
I love the ugly
~
okay maybe not the "ugly ugly" of ugly
but
"just the things people never pay attention to ugly"
~~
due to this fascination of mine
I've already prepared myself to the fact that one of these days
I'll get a traffic ticket for inattentive driving
and
in my head I already have the
"but officer you just can't believe..."
script
ready to roll
~~
or I'll be caught trespassing
in which case I'm ready to pretend that I don't speak any english
or that I'm just really stupid
~
either way I think I can be convincing
~~
~hola yo no mo engliss my bad no go~
~~
so today
see the ugly in your own way
not my way
because that would be copying
and
I'll have none of that
~~
kidding...my blog loves...just kidding
~~
but seriously
what did you see today or yesterday that nobody else paid any attention to
that captured your eye
and
maybe even your heart
?

  1. How about my own shadow...with being this heavy even though I'm working on it, that was pretty ugly and no one but me saw it. Says a lot, don't you think?

  2. I don't know if I just don't notice ugly, or gloss over it so quickly that it doesn't register. Well, yes, come to think of it i did see some ugly the other day. The valley was filled with fingerlings of cloud - mostly white, but with dark grey mixed in. Smoke from the burning of garden refuse, something that I can't believe is still allowed and which is a terrible blot on this otherwise wonderful place.

  3. I really like photographing the ugly too. But to me, these things aren't ugly. They make much more intersting photos and they make my mind wonder. For instance, last week I took a photo of a rusty old pick up with tires thrown in the back and weeds growing up all around it. I thought it was pure beauty and my mind wondered what the truck looked like when it was new, who drove it and what was it used for and how did it end up here and in this shape.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I daydream a lot too and have different scenarios whirling around in my head, just in case.....

  4. This is a great photo! It has so much dimension and makes one think and wonder...

I love these things too. In fact, I am tempted to drive about 150 miles to take photos of several old abandoned houses out in the desert. I could kick myself for not stopping back in August to take get these shots. It was HOT and I couldn't leave my dog in the car or burn her little feet on the very hot sand. So...I have been thinking about these places over and over. I'll post them soon, wait and see!

  6. I must admit I've always had an eye for what most people would consider "ugly", I think it's sympathy pains - ha! Seriously though, I love the glamour and the rustic, the old and the new, and bringing out the pretty in what has been neglected. I'm glad you do this as well, "ugly" needs an advocate.

    :-)

    (((hugs))),
    love,
    me

  7. Beth, I totally know what you mean. I call it "over-looked beauty". I crane my head whenever I happen to see broken down tractors, trailers, trucks...the rustier the better! And Broken down barns, etc. There are a few places I keep dying to photograph that I am scared to get busted for trespassing, so I don't dare try.

  9. The best part about ugly is how each individual perceives ugly. Like the other comments, we all seem to like ugly in our own way. I was at walmart today & believe me, I saw some ugly, but if you look past what is perceived to be ugly, it was quite beautiful! Love the picture!

  10. I too like to find the unexpected (which can be "ugly" to some). But I can't help but to find the pretty in almost everything...dang optimist!

  11. Good one Holly!!
I don't really find this photo ugly at all, but I will take you up on your challenge and find one. (Maybe not tomorrow because I already have tomorrow's post half written in my head. Speaking of head....can we just use a self portait???

  12. Yesterday I saw an English bull dog. I think those dogs are so ridiculously adorable even though if I were to describe the dog in words probably 'ugly' would come to mind. I love the unconventional and oddities. I love your picture, and ugly does not come to mind in the least. Thank you for sharing.

  13. Beth, I think the only ugly I have seen are flowers dying in my flowerbeds, but they can still be beautiful..lovely post.

  14. I liked your picture and it doesn't really seem ugly to me...maybe it's not a Monet scene but it has its own beauty. That's the point really, we each see beauty differently. Thank heavens, or there would certainly be a lot of lonely people out there!

  15. I need new tyers, not sue if these will fit my car though. Ugly is defiantly the price of new tyers.

I think it's nice to photograph what is considered ugly for a different perspective and challenge people's thought and allow them to see ugly in a new light.

  16. reminds me your post 'Beautiful in the Broken' ...

'ugly' is such a subjective experience, just like beauty. anything with crumbling paint is going to have me slamming on the brakes.

sometimes looking in the mirror is all it takes, though!

  17. Yesterday I saw swarms of carpenter ants pour out of my basement ceiling beams and drop to the floor in a writhing stupor after the Bug Man sprayed them with deadly goo. It was really ugly. But kinda cool!

  19. I'll show you tomorrow what caught my eye today. Today I'm showing you what caught my eye and made me crow with delight a few days ago, when I was busy showing you things from Mexico.

  20. Beth, I'm out of hiding on JW.

Decided to just come out with it!! :)

I see so many houses down here and think of you. Homes that once sheltered families, saw children birthed and loved ones slip away, and now they just sit vacant, in disrepair.

I always wish you were here to help hoist me over a fence so that we could go take some shots...

  21. I have to say I don't see the ugly like I may have before I took an interest in photography... now everything has merit and I love seeing how different people view their world. I saw an unusual weed growing the other day in the midst of a beautifully landscaped garden... I wondered how long it would be allowed to remain, it was so obviously not intentionally planted, but it made it all the more intriguing and photo worthy to me :)

  22. Y'know, I can't think of anything right off the bat, but I'll ponder this a while! I, too, like old buildings though, barns....

  23. Oh I see ugly a lot!!! But I love the disparity of what we see as to what it once was or could be. I laughed about your script for the police. As I've said before, I have a nasty little habit of taking pics while I drive, so I have my script as well...

  24. ohhh, i agree with you! sometimes it's the old, broken down things that i find beautiful. i really enjoy taking photos of things that are rusting rather than shiny...

  25. I saw a little kid concentrating so hard on writing her alphabet perfectly that she broke her pencil. Twice. Not ugly, but perfect.
