watch where you walk...

there are so many stones along the way
~~
~the little ones that find their way into your shoes and are irritating~
~the ones you mindlessly trip over~
~the ones that you step on just right that force your foot to slide forward
and
jerk your body backwards~
~the ones you kick out of the way while your focus is on the ground
because your mind is so full you're unable to keep your head upright~
~the ones so large and important
that they act as a path to move you forward as you step on them~
~the ones so tiny that when there are hundreds of them together
they feel as warm as beach sand in your hand~
and
what about the ones that are smooth
and
just plain feel good when you touch them
and
end up going home with you after a ride in your pocket
?
I think
if you think about it
stones are just like the people we come across everyday
and
the ones that feel the best
and
are warm
and
guide us on the path of life
are
the ones we keep
and
call
our friends

  1. And I hope that you can count me as a rock to lean on when you need it and I'm only a stone's throw away by blog and email!

  3. you are so right. we do take home the good ones... and sometimes we find the ones that someone else might not take, but we take and love anyway. friends are like rocks... beautiful words! you are definitely one of the smooth rocks, providing a soft place to soothe our souls.

  4. As the "Rock Fairy" I have become, leaving my painted rocks in unexpected places, touch-stones with messages for people to find, I so relate to the idea of rocks as friends !
In honor of this beautiful post, I would love to send you some of my Rock My World rocks, Miss Beth. Would you please email me your address ?
Maybe when you get them you could take some of them on an adventure and photography them to show me ? I would love, love, love that !!!!

(I am writing all this and then thought maybe you have no idea what rocks I am talking about...here is the link to my original post about Rock my World if you want to check it out ! http://queen-of-arts.blogspot.com/2008/10/rocking-my-world-some-more-plus-rocking.html)

  5. I was thinking about the stones as life moments... some only trip us up while others try to block our path. Then I got to the part about friends! What a lovely analogy.... It's worth a second read!

I love the rock/people analogy! Here in my neck of the woods, we have alot of limestone, which after a time, crystalizes and shines with a white brilliance almost like diamonds. I find them in different stages of progression on my daily walks. Sometimes, the whole rock is shiny, sometimes it's still forming, like me.

  14. Hi Beth,

I would never think of stones in this way. It would never occur to me. Only their nuisance value and that jerk when your foot slips! I am looking anew!

  15. You, my friend, are one of the smooth river stones that they warm and put in the bottom of your pedicure foot soaking basin. Pure comfort and beauty.
