I'm in my early forties
and I'm thrilled that I've made it this far.

My life has been pretty easy
so I can't complain.
I have love...lots of love
and
roofs over my head
and
a studio to play in
and
a hubby who fills my heart, makes me laugh and spoils me rotten
and
kids who "get me"

BUT
what I don't have
is a way
to keep these furry
little punks
out of my birdfeeders.

Yep,
they're cute.
I mean really,
look at those feet.
And the fact that they think
the animal baffle
we put up to keep them away
is a very convenient stool in which to sit on.

how to I keep the raccoons away from the feeders ??
oh sigh....i know what you mean about them being cute but that they should have more manners. they come into my garden and think it is very entertaining to take the hose pipe that recirculates the water in our pond and wave it around in the air letting all the water spill out onto the ground. it is no use trying to fight the wild life in my garden. i end up feeling kind of bossy and foolish cause they never listen and always outsmart me. no offers of help from me i guess :) i enjoy your thoughts and photos beth.

I have heard good reports of hanging the bird feeders in the middle of a line. On either side of the feeder you put empty two-liter bottles, which makes it hard for them to balance. I've never seen it in action and it probably looks reasonably hideous, but it's an idea...

I love the artist Kay Foley. Here's what she said on one of her cards:
ReplyDeleteShe fed the birds every day but a fat grey squirrel came along and ate everything before they got much. She decided to change her way of thinking. "I'm feeding that grey squirrel and I hope to God the birds don't get to it first." It made her very happy.
I think if you substitute racoon for squirrel, it just might fit.

I have to join the chorus that cry, "Give up." Perhaps the birds can find the seeds that fall to the ground. Birds must be clever to survive in Raccoon World, but they do.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, racoons out in the middle of the day are a tad scarry. In your case I am sure it is cuz you are their buddy, so they feel comfy coming out to dine at your house. I agree, start a coon station and put out water and food for them. They love to wash their hands after they eat. They also really love to eat tuna fish! I am sure you can come up with some whimsical containers for their food and water and get some great photos in the process!
